D-M’s
client-driven methodology for gathering, processing, and producing electronic
evidence, is as precise and thorough
as possible. We aim to be efficient and flexible according to client needs,
offering several ways to reduce the document population and manage
cost.
We strive to identify up front what the project could entail and consider
how best to tackle the job at hand, working closely with the client to
create effective solutions to meet the known—and unknown—demands
of the case.
Here is a general outline of the careful steps that D-M takes in processing
electronic evidence. Not every step is required, of course, and circumstances
may arise calling for additional, unforeseen handling procedures.
Inventory and Analysis
- Loading / Media Handling / Creating Inventories
- Load from transport media (CD, DVD, Hard Drive or Tape) or FTP to
drives for processing
- Complete file metrics
- Examine email file archive contents
- Examine non-email file contents
- Preprocessing Analysis
- Combine media inventories
- Estimate, discuss, and fine-tune project volume, scope, and requirements
with client
Searchable Database Development
- Setup
- Strategize with client, determine provision of disk space for processing, and
set up database as per client requirements
- Record Creation
- Create a record for each disk file, email, or attachment
- Unpacking of Archive Files
- Expand zips, tars, bzips, gzip, and other archive or compressed
files
- De-duplication
- Identify and remove duplicate files in a given file set, or over
the entire population, while keeping track of source
- Filtering
- Filter files and emails using client-specified search terms
- Text Creation
- Create formatted readable text
- Database Generation
- Set up databases or export formats per client specifications, with
links to either native files or images
- Creating TIFF File Images
- Generate standard Group IV TIFF file images for each page
- Generate color images, if desired
- Convert color images to Group IV TIFFs, if requested
- Removing Blank TIFFs
- Eliminate blank TIFFs generated by spreadsheets and other applications
(may reduce page / TIFF count by up to 10%)
- Special Handling
- Manually prepare problematic spreadsheets for TIFF file generation
- Hand process anomalous, encrypted, corrupted, or encoded data
- Manage specialized client requirements
- Production Numbering
- Re-number TIFF files for selected document records for production
- TIFF Numbering and Embossing
- Add text to TIFF files at production time
- Exports
- Export to Concordance, Summation, or JFS Litigator’s Notebook
